Bing (0 points) vs Yisheng (0 points)

Feature match round 1:
Yinkwan (0 points) vs Marvin (0 points)
Yinkwan and Marvin are both old birds at MTG, starting way back when we were still a small playgroup when we were studying in RI. Let’s see whether they still have it in them to do well in drafts.
Game 1
Yinkwan wins the die roll and opts to go first. Both players drop lands until Marvin misses his land drop on turn 3. Things didn’t look so good for Marvin when Yinkwan used his turn 4 to play one of his many rares, a Retaliator Griffin. Marvin, on his own turn peels off his card and can only respond by islandcycling his Jhessian Zombies. Griffin beats in for the first 2 damage of the game, and then on postcombat things got worse when Yinkwan played another bomb, Spellbound Dragon.
Yinkwan 20 Marvin 18
Marvin, apparently distraught, calls upon the help of Jhessian Balmgiver and passes with blue mana up. Yinkwan merely swings both his rare cards, and Marvin casts Unsummon on the Spellbound Dragon, trying to buy time. He falls to 16. Yinkwan replays the dragon on postcombat and helps himself to a Wildfield Borderpost too.
Yinkwan 20 Marvin 16
Marvin drops an Aven Squire and swings with his Jhessian Balmgiver. He isn’t too pleased to see the Retaliator Griffin grow to a 4/4. Well, at least he dealt 2 damage, but he needs permanent answers to the 2 bombs. He passes with mana up.
Yinkwan 18 Marvin 16
Yinkwan plays a Qasali Pridemage and swings with only the Retaliator Griffin in order to receive the exalted bonus. Griffin deals 5 damage.
Yinkwan 18 Marvin 11
Marvin can only play his Sedraxis Alchemist and pass the turn. Yinkwan attempts a Rhox Meditant which gets countered by Soul Manipulation. Manipulation nets back Marvin his earlier islandcycled Jhessian Zombies, but he is helpless when the fliers both turn sideways, discarding a Nacatl Outlander to the dragon. Jhessian Balmgiver prevents 1 damage.
Yinkwan 18 Marvin 3
Marvin doesn’t find anything to answer the fliers and its game right there on the next turn.
Yinkwan 18 Marvin 0
Yinkwan wins Game 1
Marvin really must find something to deal with Yinkwan’s bombs, though it really is easier said than done. Even I was pretty stumped by the blisteringly gay consecutive bombs on turns 4 and 5 of Yinkwan’s turn. How the hell did he draft those without being hated away? Retailator Griffin into Spellbound Dragon is kind of crazy.

Sideboarding:

Yinkwan:
IN – Meddling Mage
OUT – Rhox Meditant
Marvin:
IN – Celestial Purge

Game 2
Marvin opted to play first, but the first spell belonged to Yinkwan, who played Nacatl Outlander on turn 2. Turn 3 saw Marvin casting, on his main phase, a vanilla Ethersworn Shieldmage, which prompted a “go” from Yinkwan. Yinkwan played a Qasali Pridemage on his own turn 3, and swung with his Nacatl Outlander which netted an exalted bonus. Marvin takes 3 damage.
Yinkwan 20 Marvin 17
Marvin on turn 4 makes a big play: Wall of Reverence. The wall causes him to gain 2 life at his end of turn.
Yinkwan 20 Marvin 19
And guess what…out pops out Retaliator Griffin again. Marvin simply shrugged, drew his card for the turn and passed, content to sit back and let Yinkwan find a way past his barrier while he gains life from the wall.
Yinkwan 20 Marvin 21
Yinkwan continues his bomb laying, dropping a Spellbreaker Behemoth. Marvin plays his Esper Stormblade and passes, gaining life again.
Yinkwan 20 Marvin 24
Yinkwan swings with his 3 creatures: Griffin, Spellbreaker Behemoth, Outlander. Spellbreaker Behemoth is blocked by Wall of Reverence. Postcombat Wild Leotau is played, Marvin seems a little frustrated now.
Yinkwan 20 Marvin 20
Out comes Aven Squire for Marvin. Esper Stormblade swings and the Retaliator Griffin gains counters. Marvin gains life at end of turn and passes.
Yinkwan 16 Marvin 24
Yinkwan attacks with 3 creatures: Griffin, Spellbreaker Behemoth, Wild Leotau. Wall of Reverence blocks the Spellbreaker Behemoth once more. Unsummon hits the griffin and Wild Leotau goes through for 5 damage. Retaliator Griffin replayed.
Yinkwan 16 Marvin 19
Marvin swings with his Esper Stormblade again, and gains life again.
Yinkwan 12 Marvin 23
Yinkwan attacks with his Nacatl Outlander, behemoth and Wild Leotau. Wall of Reverence blocks behemoth as usual, marvin falls to 16. Postcombat Spellbound Dragon joins the force of Yinkwan. Griffin is held back untapped.
Yinkwan 12 Marvin 16
Marvin goes for a Vedalken Outlander. He passes the turn and gains 3 life.
Yinkwan 14 Marvin 19
Yinkwan turns all but the Qasali Pridemage sideways. The dragon munches up a Wildfield Borderpost and gets +3/+0. Wall of Reverence blocks Wild Leotau, and Aven Squire valiantly chumps the dragon. Spellbreaker Behemoth goes through.
Yinkwan 14 Marvin 14
Marvin goes for Faerie Mechanist and plays the reveal Vedalken Outlander. Now he has two outlanders. He swings with the  non-summoning sickness outlander to knock Yinkwan to 12, and then gains life.
Yinkwan 12 Marvin 16
Swing with all except the Qasali Pridemage again. Spellbreaker Behemoth, Nacatl Outlander, Retaliator Griffin, Wild Leotau, Spellbound Dragon (discarding Rhox Meditant). Marvin blocks desperately, in the end he has 4 life left. Faerie Mechanist and Esper Stormblade and Ethersworn Shieldmage all gave up their lives.
Yinkwan 12  Marvin 4
Marvin bounces the Retaliator Griffin with a Sedraxis Alchemist, but it’s too late. Next alpha strike seals it for Yinkwan.
Yinkwan 12 Marvin 0
Yinkwan wins Game 2.
Yinkwan wins match 2-0.
Yinkwan’s deck is full of bombs, It’s almost unbelievable…will anyone be able to stop him? Find out as we continue the coverage of the draft.

Round 1 results
Yinkwan 2 Marvin 0
Leon 2 Jit Yao 0 – Leon’s Ethersworn Adjudicator was an absolute house
Soon Yoong 2 Muz 1 – Soon topdecked Absorb Vis to snatch dramatic G3 victory.
Bing 2 Yisheng 1 – Yish with his 3 Volcanic Fallouts went down after 3 intense fights.
Standings after Round 1
Yinkwan – 3 points
Leon – 3 points
Soon Yoong – 3 points
Bing – 3 points
Marvin – 0 points
Jit Yao – 0 points
Muz – 0 points
Yisheng – 0 points

Round 2 matchups:
Yinkwan (3 points) vs Leon (3 points) (feature match)
Soon Yoong (3 points) vs Bing (3 points)
Marvin (0 points) vs Jit Yao (0 points)
Yisheng (0 points) vs Muz (0 points)

Feature match round 2:
Yinkwan (3 points) vs Leon (3 points)
We have seen how Yinkwan thrashed Marvin upside down. Leon may prove stiffer competition after seeing his Ethersworn Adjudicator completely obliterate Jit Yao. This should be an interesting match-up.
Game 1
Leon goes for turn 2 Rupture Spire while Yinkwan responds with Armillary Sphere. Turn 3 play was a Brackwater Elemental for Leon while Yinkwan had nothing. Thought Hemorrhage on turn 4 named “Spellbreaker Behemoth” and hit (perhaps a little unfair since Yinkwan had to reveal Behemoth before the game started due to a proxy for it). The brackwater swung in for 4. Yinkwan sacrifices his sphere at end of eot for Forest and Mountain.
Yinkwan 16 Leon 20
Yinkwan plays Rhox Meditant. Leon unearths the elemental in the graveyard and they both trade. Leon passes with no play. Yinkwan lays his Spellbound Dragon next turn and Leon cycles his Traumatic Visions at the eot. Leon tries for Faerie Mechanist and sees Terminate, Kathari Remnant, and Mountain. As if adding insult to injury of not getting a free card, there goes his answer to the dragon. Yinkwan casts a Deadshot Minotaur, and its aim was true as it sniped down the poor faerie. Spellbound then swung in undeterred discarding a Wild Leotau for a chunky piece of 7 damage.
Yinkwan 16 Leon 13
Leon taps out and casts Absorb Vis to the amusement of Yinkwan.
Yinkwan 12 Leon 17
Yinkwan swings with the Deadshot Minotaur and Spellbound Dragon. (discarding a Nacatl Outlander). That’s 8 damage in the face. He drops a postcombat Nacatl Hunt-Pride. The race is on.
Yinkwan 12 Leon 9
Leon thinks for a bit and casts Absorb Vis. Yes you read it right. He casts 2 of it in 2 turns. We don’t know how many of it he has.
Yinkwan 8 Leon 13
Unfortunately we will never find out as Yinkwan alpha strikes and strikes the jackpot as Wildfield Borderpost pumps the dragon, bringing the total combat damage this turn to 14. Leon mumbles in disgust at his bad luck.
Yinkwan 8 Leon 0
Yinkwan wins Game 1.
That was an exciting race, it looks like Leon has the arsenal required to push Yinkwan all the way, but for this game he fell short in the end. Can he go one better in game 2? Don’t forget that it was bad luck that the Faerie Mechanist sent Terminate to the bottom, or it could have been a very different story.

Sideboarding:

Yinkwan:
IN – Meddling Mage
OUT – Rhox Meditant
Leon:
no sideboards

Game 2
Leon plays first, he leads with plains while Yinkwan had a turn one Wildfield Borderpost. For some reason Yinkwan hasn’t run into mana problems yet thus far. Leon on the other hand, missed his turn 3 land drop, but thankfully got back with a Swamp on turn 4. On Turn 5 Yinkwan played his Meddling Mage, naming Ethersworn Adjudicator. (Perhaps Jit Yao gave him intel?) Leon seemed perplexed (truth is, he had the adjudicator in his hand, I know this because I’m reporting) He opted to cast Yoke of the damned on the mage. Spellbound Dragon came down from Yinkwan, ominous as ever, while the mage crashed in for 2 damage. Amazing how it took so long for the first points of damage to be dealt. With mage stopping Leon from playing his bomb, and a dragon to boot, Yinkwan is now in a privileged position.
Yinkwan 20 Leon 18
Leon can only sigh as his bomb is still stuck. He opts for Infectious horror and passes, sighing audibly. In comes the dragon (I’ve lost count of the number of times he has served duty for Yinkwan) and it eats up a Wild Leotau for lunch, also not for the first time definitely. As a 7/5, Leon is now down to 11…AND his bomb is still stuck in his hand. Meddling Mage is truly MVP here. To make things worse for Leon, Yinkwan solemnly lays a postcombat Matca Rioters and Jhessian Balmgiver. Ouch.
Yinkwan 20 Leon 11
Finally Leon gets what he needs to take out the Mage, he Drag Down-ed the balmgiver, taking out the mage in the process because of Yoke of the damned. The problem is, he doesn’t have enough mana to cast his Ethersworn Adjudicator this turn…and it really looks like it’s too late. Spellbound Dragon swoops down again (eating up a Wildfield Borderpost this time) along with the Matca Rioters, which get chumped by Infectious Horror. But Leon is down to 5…
Yinkwan 20 Leon 5
Nothing can save Leon now. Ethersworn Adjudicator is not an out as it would have to block dragon while Matca Rioters goes through, bringing Leon down to 1.
Yinkwan 20 Leon 1
No answer. Game over with the next alpha strike. Matca Rioters takes it home.
Yinkwan 20 Leon 0
Yinkwan wins Game 2.
Yinkwan wins match 2-0.
Meddling mage is simply a pain in the ass. Though it wasn’t around to share the spoils of victory, it did the dirty job of holding Leon’s bomb at bay long enough so that the rest of the team can take the cake.

Round 2 results
Yinkwan 2 Leon 0
Bing 2 Soon Yoong 0 – Bing absolutely pummeled this one, winning in <10
Marvin 2 Jit Yao 0 – Wall of Reverence + clock = win
Yisheng 2 Muz 1 – Rakka Mar making tokens FTW
Standings after Round 2
Yinkwan – 6 points
Bing – 6 points
Leon – 3 points
Soon Yoong – 3 points
Bing – 3 points
Marvin – 3 points
Yisheng – 3 points
Jit Yao – 0 points
Muz – 0 points

Round 3 matchups:
Yinkwan (6 points) vs Bing (6 points) (feature match)
Yisheng (3 points) vs Leon (3 points)
Soon Yoong (3 points) vs Marvin (3 points)
Jit Yao (0 points) vs Muz (0 points)
Feature match round 3: Yinkwan (6 points) vs Bing (6 points)
Both of these players have earned themselves a place at the top tables, Yinkwan has been featured in all our feature matches thus far, and deservedly so as he plowed through his opponents with his Spellbound Dragon serving good time. Will it serve him well again against Bing? I have word that he is playing an aggressive esper deck that runs walls. Wait a minute…playing WALLS in an aggressive esper deck? Then again results don’t lie, lets get to the game.
Game 1
Bing plays first. Turn 2 sees Nacatl Outlander for Yinkwan and Vedalken Outlander from Bing. Interestingly these critters have protection from each other. Like Yin and Yang. Lol. Bing plays a Darklit Gargoyle on turn 3. Yinkwan simply turns his outlander sideways.
Yinkwan 20 Bing 18
Bing swings back with his goyle and outlander, returning the favour with 50% interest (2damage + 1damage interest)
Yinkwan 17 Bing 18
Yinkwan simply swings back.
Yinkwan 17 Bing 16
Bing does the same thing with same interest rate. But he sweetens the deal with a postcombat Bant Sureblade which has its bonus activated thanks to the Vedalken Outlander.
Yinkwan 14 Bing 16
Yinkwan summons a Deadshot Minotaur, which obliges and gleefully shoots down Bing’s Darklit Gargoyle. Nacatl Outlander swings to tie the scores at 14 apiece.
Yinkwan 14 Bing 14
Bing Unsummons the Deadshot Minotaur and crashes in with his outlander and sureblade for 5 damage. Postcombat, he plays another Bant Sureblade. Looks like his aim is to outrace Yinkwan.
Yinkwan 9 Bing 14
Yinkwan lays a Nacatl Hunt-Pride. He pauses before deciding not to attack. Bing then swings with his Vedalken Outlander, a play error. He forgets that Nacatl Hunt-Pride is white, and loses his Outlander for nothing. He chides himself for the play error. Will it cost him the game? Yinkwan swings with his Hunt Pride which gets gang blocked by the 3/2 first-striking Bant Sureblades. Could this be a play error as well? A return of the favour?...Noep. Yinkwan knows what he’s doing. Might of Alara for +3/+3 ensures the 2-for-1, the buffed Nacatl Hunt-Pride survives to fight another day while the 2 sureblades aren’t so sure of their blades anymore and die horrible deaths. On the postcombat, a glory seeking Gloryscale Viashino hops on Yinkwan’s side of the board. This seems like it could be the turning point...or is there a twist in the tale? It’s Bing’s turn now. Bing wastes no time in casting Crystallization on Nacatl Hunt-Pride. Just the answer he needed…but Yinkwan…calmly showed his answer to the enchantment with Qasali Pridemage. Yinkwan then turned his guys sideways for a good 11 damage…
Yinkwan 9 Bing 3
…and finished him off the next turn with a nasty alpha strike.
Yinkwan 9 Bing 0
Yinkwan wins Game 1.
Today seems like Yinkwan’s day, nothing can stop him at the moment. Even when Bing had the upper hand, the heavens seem to be smiling at Yinkwan as Bing made a costly play error with the Vedalken Outlander. It could have been so different and Bing has only himself to blame if he loses this…

Nobody sideboards.

Game 2
Turn 3 sees Bing cycle a Constricting Tendrils. No one plays anything until turn 4, where Yinkwan has the honour of playing the first spell in the form of Rhox Meditant. The rhox is a good body that cantrips a lot in a deck like Yinkwan’s, unfortunately right now he is just a body. Bing plays a Cumber Stone during his own turn to shrink the rhino, and all its future comrades. The Cumber Stone could prove to be irritating as Yinkwan attempts to swarm with creatures. Yinkwan lays a Wildfield Borderpost and swings with the rhino for a measly 1 damage.
Yinkwan 20 Bing 19
Bing drops a Glassdust Hulk and ends, causing Yinkwan to hesitate. Yinkwan opts not to attack. Bing drops a Bone Saw which is an artifact, making his Glassdust Hulk unblockable. He attaches the equipment to the Glassdust Hulk and swings for 5 unblockable damage. On the Postcombat, a Bant Sureblade joins the party. With a friend by his side, the soldier has first strike and looks pretty menacing.
Yinkwan 15 Bing 19
Yinkwan lays Armillary Sphere and ends his turn. Bing lays a Darklit Gargoyle, making Glassdust Hulk unblockable again. He swings with it but it eats a Path to Exile from Yinkwan. Timely combat trick there to stem the bleeding…AND shrink the Bant Sureblade as Bing lost his only multicolor permanent, so it loses its bonus. Bing frowns a little and attaches the Bone Saw to the shrunken soldier and ends the turn, prompting Yinkwan to sacrifice his Armillary Sphere. Yinkwan draws for his own turn and lays his Wild Leotau. Bing is ready with a move, he attaches the Bone Saw to Darklit Gargoyle and swings for 2, before attaching it back to the Bant Sureblade on postcombat. Then…he drops a Wall of Denial, effectively shutting out Yinkwan’s plans of staging an offense with the Wild Leotau. Yinkwan shakes his head worryingly…that Wall of Denial is going to be a problem…
Yinkwan 13 Bing 19
Yinkwan lays a Rhox Meditant. This time it cantrips. Wild Leotau attacks and Bing opts not to block with his Wall of Denial, Bing takes 5 damage.
Yinkwan 13 Bing 14
Bing swings with his Darklit Gargoyle for 1 damage. He lays Esper Cormorants on the postcombat. I wonder why he doesn’t attach his Bone Saw with the remaining mana…anyway, he passes the turn there.
Yinkwan 12 Bing 14
Yinkwan is ready with Deadshot Minotaur targeting Esper Cormorants…but now I see what Bing has been hiding: Lapse of Certainty. The Deadshot Minotaur will have to wait...and this seems like a major tempo setback for Yinkwan, judging from the dismay on his face. Nevertheless Wild Leotau comes crashing in again, and this time the Wall of Denial tries to deny him, but deny him it cannot, for Might of Alara makes sure that the wall is gone for good. Bing claims he expected it, and although I first wrote it off as him trying to save some pride, he plays another Wall of Denial.
Yes this is not a print error. He just plays another Wall of Denial, with a look of zen on his face…
…prompting Yinkwan to ask him how many he has. Bing simply said maybe a playset. Bing plays out a foil Talon Trooper, building up a formidable flying army, and swings with his Esper Cormorants and Darklit Gargoyle. Yinkwan seems like he’s in trouble.
Yinkwan 8 Bing 14
Yinkwan replays his Deadshot Minotaur which finally does the deed of killing the Esper Cormorants, but that’s about all Yinkwan can do, with the Wall of Denial laughing in his face. The next attack saw a Bone Saw-wielding Talon Trooper and Darklit Gargoyle come swooping in. I can safely declare that Yinkwan has 1 turn to find an answer.
Yinkwan 4 Bing 14
He doesn’t. I’ll skip the formalities.
Yinkwan 0 Bing 14.
Bing wins Game 2.
Wall of Denial, or rather, two of them, do their job of keeping Yinkwan’s beaters at bay while the fliers do their work slowly but surely. Tricks like Lapse of Certainty help to buy more tempo as well, supporting the main cast of small but efficient flying beaters. Simple strategy, but as can be seen here, it works. This is the first game that Yinkwan has lost all day, will he lose the match now? A crowd has gathered to watch this game 3…

Game 3
Yinkwan drops a turn 1 Wildfield Borderpost and Bing is stuck on Islands, unable to play anything. The first creature was a Gloryscale Viashino from Yinkwan on turn 4, and Bing pulls off his Plains finally to drop his Wall of Denial. Yinkwan then helps himself to Rhox Meditant which triggers the cantrip, and then Retaliator Griffin, which makes Bing pick up the card to read it. I don’t think he was pleased with what he read. He plays a Talon Trooper which probably will not do so well with Retaliator Griffin around. On his next turn he goes for Cumber Stone and decides to valiantly push in his Talon Trooper which gets 2 damage in, and Retaliator Griffin starts to grow…
Yinkwan 18 Bing 20
Yinkwan swings back with all his critters and the Wall of Denial blocks the Retaliator Griffin.
Yinkwan 18 Bing 17
Bing swings again and drops the second Wall of Denial. Yinkwan doesn’t seem so amused this time. Retaliator Griffin grows again, but not big enough to beat through a wall.
Yinkwan 16 Bing 17
Yinkwan turns all sideways but gets in for 1 damage this time as there are 2 Wall of Denials now. Problem is, Spellbound Dragon makes his dramatic entrance. Spellbound Dragon has been owning games for Yinkwan in matches thus far. If left unchecked it could go the distance again.
Yinkwan 16 Bing 16
Bing drops a Bone Saw on the Talon Trooper and swings, then puts a Crystallization on the Retaliator Griffin.
Yinkwan 13 Bing 16
Confident of racing, Yinkwan swings with all, he doesn’t discard anything big to his Spellbound Dragon and therefore only hits for 1 damage.
Yinkwan 13 Bing 15
Bing swings again with the Talon Trooper.
Yinkwan 10 Bing 15
Yinkwan swings and flips a Wildfield Borderpost. Still not enough to kill the Wall of Denial.
Yinkwan 7 Bing 14
Yinkwan swings with his Spellbound Dragon, a Wall of Denial blocks, and Might of Alara takes it down. 1 down and 1 left! Bing swings back, and casts Darklit Gargoyle.
Yinkwan 4 Bing 14
Yinkwan kills Crystallization with a freshly cast Qasali Pridemage, the Retaliator Griffin is back for duty. Bing draws and plays a Vedalken Outlander, he has a problem now and cannot beat through Retaliator Griffin with Talon Trooper or the Darklit Gargoyle. Yinkwan alpha strikes with all except the Retaliator Griffin to hold the Talon Trooper back, Bing is down to 5 after blocks and damage.
Yinkwan 4 Bing 5
Bing draws his card and grins, feinting a combat trick such as Unsummon. He confidently attacks with Talon Trooper, Darklit Gargoyle, and Vedalken Outlander with a Bone Saw on it. No matter how Yinkwan blocks with the lonely Retaliator Griffin, he will still die. But no one banked on him having a Path to Exile
Yinkwan 3 Bing 5
Yinkwan alpha strikes for the win, led by the once more inspirational Spellbound Dragon (Yinkwan admitted that he got the Qasali Pridemage, answering the Crystallization, because of the fast pseudo-draw-2-cards-a-turn caused by the dragon’s fearsome ability).
Yinkwan 3 Bing 0
Yinkwan wins match 2-1.
Yinkwan takes it home again, but just barely. Then again, he shows that his record isn’t a fluke, and came off arguably his toughest match thus far with the 3 points. He guarantees himself a spot in the top4 playoffs with this win, even if he loses his next match.
