Draft Report for 10 March 2008

This draft was a really fun one. Terrys house was the venue for some really nail biting action in a LORLORMNT draft which saw a pool throw up legions of powerful elves... allowing 3 players to draft elves and they were all powerful decks. Maybe because of the downpour, but the pool threw up a playset of silvergill dousers too.

Photobucket

And for added measure, Terry keeps mulldrifters as pets! Take a look!

Photobucket

It is also interesting to note that a number of class gatherings were missed in favour of drafting on this rain-soaked monday.

Here was the outcome of the round robin stage... which separated the very best from a very even playing field in which anyone could have Top4ed. From a deck running playset veteran of the depths and another one running 3 silvergill dousers, to another one running full blown elementals with soulstoke and ceaseless searblade and aethersnipe, to treefolk with shriekmaw eyeblights ending and violet pall, it was hard to tell who would go through.

Photobucket

Lots of fierce battles took place!!!!!!!!!!! It took everything from decking... bad alpha strike decisions.... and even 1/1 prickly boggarts to settle certain disputes (ahem ahem). This shows how tight most of the matches were.

Photobucket

However, here were the results eventually.!!

Before we start on the report, lets take a look at the post-draft interview of the players involved.

Any interesting moments in any of your matches you would like to share?

i did 9 dmg in 1 turn to win against weixiang game 1. i kinshipped pyroclast council the previous turn and got wort. Played wort, traded council with something, next turn got back tarfire, attacked with wort (fear), tarfired and giants ired for the win.

against jonlim, i flamekin harbinger a consuming bonfire, at his EOT I makeshift mannequined on pyroclast consul so that the kinship will sweep his board.

Would u be interested in attending the next draft (Shadowmoor) in june?

^_^ yea i think a SSS would be gd cos its another 301 card block

In your opinion, what is the most powerful card in this particular draft?

wasnt much of a most powerful card... but i can say i died twice to unstoppable ash

In your opinion, what is the most underrated card during card picking in this draft?

not much to say but i can say i overestimated pyroclast consul

What is your most hated card for this draft and why?
lol got a lot. anything tat kills wort

We are thinking of 2 different ways of giving out prizes in the next draft.A. pool rares at the end. Use the 2-1-1-1, skip-1-1-1 format.B. each person pays $5 more. Keep rares. We will have a prize pool of 12 boosters.
Which are you more in favour of?

not boosters... cards better. cos booster also not a guarantee. maybe like one mutavault tat sort. tats wat i feel... i rather have mutavault than boosters. (modified version of B)

Thanks for your time. Anything interesting about yourself you would like to share with our readers?

^_^ i tried designing tarfire logo

What deck are you playing?

GBW elves

What deck would u like to draft if you had your way?

More Archers

What do u think is the most powerful tribe to draft in LLM generally?

Rogue

Did you expect to top 4?

Yes

Are you satisfied with your deck for this draft?

No

Why or why not?

Wanted to draft more archers (changelings are archers). Removal wise was good, not enough synergy among my cards.

What good cards are you running?

Removal in general, Pall, Ending, Shriekmaw etc... Imperious Perfect!

How do u think u could have improved your draft?

Hard to say… few picks, could have gone a different colour as the people around me drafted green… Blue was open.

Any interesting moments in any of your matches you would like to share?

When Violet Pall token prevented me from dying to Terry, and I won the next turn.

Would u be interested in attending the next draft (Shadowmoor) in june?

Yes

In your opinion, what is the most powerful card in this particular draft?

Violet Pall

In your opinion, what is the most underrated card during card picking?

We are thinking of 2 different ways of giving out prizes in the next draft.A. pool rares at the end. Use the 2-1-1-1, skip-1-1-1 format.B. each person pays $5 more. Keep rares. We will have a prize pool of 12 boosters.
Which are you more in favour of?

B. Pooling rares is bad.

Thanks for your time. Anything interesting about yourself you would like to share with our readers?

I play team fortress 2.

What deck are you playing?

Treefolk/goblin/elf.jank

What deck would u like to draft if you had your way?

Islands.

What do u think is the most powerful tribe to draft in LLM generally?

Anything with islands.

Did you expect to top 4?

Frankly, no. My deck wasn’t top 4 material.

Are you satisfied with your deck for this draft?

Definitely not.

Why or why not?

I didn’t have as much staples as I wanted.

What good cards are you running?

Splashed white for Feudkillers Verdict and Coordinated Barrage. Had Shriekmaw and Eyeblight’s Ending.

How do u think u could have improved your draft?

Should have taken meat over mana fixers when early picking.

Any interesting moments in any of your matches you would like to share?

Prickly boggart beatdown won me 3 games (2 against mark and 1 against leon) Runed Stalactite + Prickly + Black Poplar Shaman is pretty formidable.

James would have beaten me 2-0 if he had made the right decisions. If he had placed Magistrate Counters on his Changeling Hero, it would be gg.

Would u be interested in attending the next draft (Shadowmoor) in june?

Yes

In your opinion, what is the most powerful card in this particular draft?

Lys Alana Huntsmaster is gay. Same with Bramblewood Paragon. Elves were all star show.

In your opinion, what is the most underrated card during card picking?

Silvergill Dousers! And Black Poplar Shaman which I took like 12th.

Pay $5 more. Non top4s will not feel hard done by if they open good rares as they get to keep them.

Thanks for your time. Anything interesting about yourself you would like to share with our readers?

I have played magic since 2004.

What deck are you playing?
Blue merfolk, splashing white (weight of conscience, burrenton bombardier, neck snap) and black (final revels)

What deck would u like to draft if you had your way?
Elves, or treefolk. Never had a chance to draft them before.

What do u think is the most powerful tribe to draft in LLM generally?
Probably elves or treefolk. Crazy engines, good individual bombs.

Are you satisfied with your deck for this draft?
Sort of.

Why or why not?
I think it could have been better, not that it's a bad deck, but I think the cardpool didn't like me. I regrettedly passed galepowder mage during second pack, though I don't remember what I took instead of it. The only saving grace was I was the only blue player as far as I know...

What good cards are you running?
3 dousers, final revels, 3 fencer cliques, benthicore. ...Those are good right?

How do u think u could have improved your draft?
Ugh. Tough one. I'm not sure. Pray for a "summon the school"? Maybe switch to another tribe...? Begged someone to pass on judge of currents to me?

Any interesting moments in any of your matches you would like to share?
Not really. My matches were boring.

Would u be interested in attending the next draft (Shadowmoor) in june?
Maybe...

In your opinion, what is the most powerful card in this particular draft?
Final revels, I think. Board clearing is always good.

In your opinion, what is the most underrated card during card picking? (i.e. cards that should have been picked earlier than they were actually picked)
Um... I really have no clue. Veteran of the depths...? It really sucks to stall against veteran of the depths.

I pick B 'cause it's more convenient.

Thanks for your time. Anything interesting about yourself you would like to share with our readers? (can be magic related or non-magic related)
Um. Nope.

What deck are you playing?

uh probably gw weenies

mono green elves/warriors

Hmm elves and perhaps merfolk

Did you expect to top 4?

at first I intended to but after losing the later rounds I don't think I should be in

Are you satisfied with your deck for this draft?

not really

Why or why not?

I think the deck is really reliant on the opening hand although the draft can't be helped since I think I drafted decently

What good cards are you running?

huntmaster, 2 paragons and the galepowder

How do u think u could have improved your draft?

probably rate the harbingers higher. I don't think there's much room for improvement in this draft since a lot of stuff were fed to me

Any interesting moments in any of your matches you would like to share?

sometimes harrier saves my life by tapping down bombs. other than that not much since the play is very straightforward.

Would u be interested in attending the next draft (Shadowmoor) in june?

Yes. who isn't >.>

In your opinion, what is the most powerful card in this particular draft?

shriekmaw since it can kill almost all the bombs. huntmaster is also pretty sick in the elf decks.

In your opinion, what is the most underrated card during card picking?

harbingers

We are thinking of 2 different ways of giving out prizes in the next draft.A. pool rares at the end. Use the 2-1-1-1, skip-1-1-1 format.B. each person pays $5 more. Keep rares. We will have a prize pool of 12 boosters.
Which are you more in favour of?

pool rares is better but I think boosters are more fun… so boosters (option B)

Thanks for your time. Anything interesting about yourself you would like to share with our readers?

TOP4 MATCH REPORTS:

Semifinal 1
Jonlim vs Mark

Photobucket

Photobucket

Cameraman: WX
Reporter: Terry

Game 1:
Mark wins the die roll and decides to play.
Jonlim decides to mulligan, while Mark is content with his opening hand.
Mark opens with a plains and mosquito guard, while Jonlim opens with a forest and passes. Mark plays mountain and attacks with guard for the first point of damage in the match.

Jonlim 19 Mark 20

Jonlim plays plains and bosk banneret, temporarily stopping the mosquito guard. Unchecked, it can also provide significant tempo boosts. Mark plays mountain, mudbutton torchrunner and passes. Jonlim plays swamp and swings with the banneret. Mark elects not to block. Jonlim plays black poplar shaman postcombat. This card has been instrumental in his previous matches, enabling his army to stall.

Jonlim 19 Mark 19

Mark plays plains and adder staff boggart, winning the clash. Jonlim plays swamp, runed stalactite, equips bosk banneret to it and finally plays skeletal changeling. Mark plays mountain and wandering graybeard. Jonlim plays forest and swings with the 2/4 banneret only to have it blocked by the torchrunner. The torchrunner dies and Mark elects to have it deal damage to Jonlim.

Jonlim 16 Mark 19

Kinship fails for Mark, and he swings with the adder staff boggart and the wandering graybeard. Jonlim tries to eyeblight's ending the giant, only to have Mark redeem the lost in response, winning the clashback. The black poplar shaman blocks the giant and the skeletal changeling blocks the boggart. Both regenerate. Jonlim plays swamp and swings with the bosk banneret. Mosquito guard chumps it. Mark's kinship triggers off an avian changeling, gaining him 4 life. Avian changeling is then played. Mark casts weight of conscience on black poplar shaman.

Jonlim 16 Mark 23

Jonlim plays forest, prickly boggart, then swings with the banneret. Graybeard blocks it, but a flashed briarhorn saves the banneret and kills the giant. At end of turn, Mark removes the black poplar shaman from the game. Mark plays knight of meadowgrain and swings with avian changeling.

Jonlim 14 Mark 23

Jonlim plays forest and attacks with bosk banneret and prickly boggart. Knight of meadowgrain blocks the banneret, and redeem the lost saves it, although the clashback is lost.

Jonlim 14 Mark 25

Mark plays axegrinder giant and attacks with avian changeling.

Jonlim 12 Mark 25

Jonlim plays masked admirers, gaining card advantage, equips runed stalactite to the prickly boggart, and swings with it for 2 unblockable damage. Unchecked, the prickly boggart can be a 13 turn clock.

Jonlim 12 Mark 23

Mark attacks with avian changeling and passes. Unchecked, the avian changeling can be a 5 turn clock.

Jonlim 10 Mark 23

Jonlim plays boggart loggers and leaf gilder. The prickly boggart swings for 2 damage.

Jonlim 10 Mark 21

Mark plays plains and attacks with avian changeling, but it is quickly logged by the loggers. So much for a 5 turn clock. Jonlim plays plains, warren pilferers pilfering black poplar shaman (this was technically illegal as black poplar shaman was rfg but nobody spots the infringement), replays it, then swings with prickly boggart.

Jonlim 10 Mark 19

To cut the long story short, this is followed by a series of irrelevant and uninteresting plays, in which Mark fails to either breach Jonlim's defenses, thanks to black poplar shaman, or find answers to prickly boggart, and succumbs to the 13 turn clock.

(Jonlim leads 1-0 on aggregate)

Game 2:
Mark decides to play, and starts off again with a first turn mosquito guard. Jonlim starts with a prickly boggart. Mark plays mountain and adder staff boggart, losing the clash, and attacks with mosquito guard.

Jonlim 19 Mark 20

Jonlim plays plains, swings with prickly boggart and plays runed stalactite. Deja vu!

Jonlim 19 Mark 19

Mark plays mountain, avian changeling and swings with adder staff boggart and mosquito guard.

Jonlim 16 Mark 19

Jonlim plays forest and black poplar shaman, making the prickly boggart much harder to remove, and swings with prickly boggart.

Jonlim 16 Mark 18

Mark plays blind spot giant and attacks with avian changeling.

Jonlim 14 Mark 18

Jonlim plays swamp and swings with prickly boggart.

Jonlim 14 Mark 17

Mark plays plains, swings with blind spot giant and avian changeling. Black poplar shaman blocks blind spot giant, and briarhorn is evoked saving the shaman. However, it gets crushed underfoot in response.

Jonlim 12 Mark 17

Jonlim plays forest, warren pilferers pilfering briarhorn, and swings with prickly boggart.

Jonlim 12 Mark 16

Mark plays mudbutton torchrunner and attacks with avian changeling. Maybe Mark is going to win this race.

Jonlim 10 Mark 16

Jonlim plays swamp, boggart loggers, sacrificing it to destroy Mark's clock in another case of deja vu, and attacks with prickly boggart.

Jonlim 10 Mark 15

Mark oblivion rings black poplar shaman, hoping to kill prickly boggart when the chance arises. Jonlim equips runed stalactite to prickly boggart and swings with it. Postcombat, he plays elvish handservant.

Jonlim 10 Mark 13

Mark plays mountain and wandering graybeard, pumping handservant in the process. Jonlim plays plains and swings with prickly boggart, then plays feudkiller's verdict, all but quashing Mark's hope of outracing Jonlim. The 5/5 giant token is just a bonus.

Jonlim 20 Mark 11

Mark plays axegrinder giant and attacks with mudbutton torchrunner.

Jonlim 19 Mark 11

Jonlim swings with prickly boggart and flashes in briarhorn pumping it, improving his clock.

Jonlim 19 Mark 6

Mark casts surge of thoughtweft, trying to dig for answers, and alpha strikes. Axegrinder giant met eyeblight's ending, giant token blocks graybeard and pilferer blocks adder staff boggart.

Jonlim 14 Mark 6

Mark concedes to a topdecked shriekmaw.

(Jonlim leads 2-0 on aggregate)

Game 3:
Mark decides to play and starts off with mosquito guard yet again. Jonlim starts with elvish handservant. They then lay land and trade beats for a few turns until Jonlim gets a bowmaster down.

Jonlim 18 Mark 18

Mark casts surge of thoughtweft, cantripping and attacks.

Jonlim 16 Mark 18

Jonlim plays forest, alpha strikes and plays cloudcrown oak.

Jonlim 16 Mark 15

Mark plays plains and passes. Jonlim plays swamp and swings with bowmaster and oak. Mark decides not to block, and Jonlim plays another cloudcrown oak, solidifying his defenses.

Jonlim 16 Mark 10

Mark oblivion rings a cloudcrown oak and passes. Jonlim plays bog strider ash, swings with cloudcrown oak and bowmaster. Mosquito guard blocks bowmaster and blades of velis vel saves the guard, but Jonlim gains 2 life from it through bog strider ash and handservant gets pumped.

Jonlim 18 Mark 7

Mark plays wolf skull shaman. Jonlim plays shriekmaw yet again, killing wolf skull shaman and alpha strikes. Handservant gets crushed underfoot and guard blocks cloudcrown oak.
Jonlim 18 Mark 5

Unable to topdeck an answer, Mark concedes.

"Tonight you will have nightmares about prickly boggarts holding runed stalactites" – Jonlim
Jonlim wins 3-0 on aggregate, aided significantly by creatures with fear. This is why evasion is so important in limited.

Semifinal 2
WX vs Leon

Photobucket

Photobucket

Cameraman: A few people
Reporter: Clem/Mark

Note that we only started watching halfway.

At this point, notable permanents on the field…

Leon: Huntmaster, Imperious perfect. Life points are at 15 against 20 (wx against leon)

Lys Alana Huntmaster, boggart loggers swing. Wx chooses to take the damage. 9 against 20.
WX plays down a Lys Alana huntmaster himself.
Boggart loggers, 2 of his tokens, and elvish warrior swings.
WX looks at his next card and scoops.

Leon 1-0

WX opts to play first in round 2. Both players open with dropping a forest.

WX plays a turn 2 bramblewood paragon (and plains)
Leon plays a festercreep (and swamp)
WX drops a forest and woodland changeling
A forest and a kithkin daggerdare hits the field for leon.
WX swings with both paragon and the changeling. Leon chooses to take the damage… 20 to 15.
Huntmaster hits the field…
But WX quickly lignifies it.
Leon drops a Game-Trail Changeling (GTC) and ends.
WX draws, thinks for a bit…. And says go.
Goldmeadow harrier played by leon… And incremental growth! Counters falling, resulting in 6/6 GTC, 2/6 treefolk (from lignify), and 2/2 festercreep and swings. WX chump blocks… and forfends to save his creatures.
He then plays an oblivion ring on GTC.
Here comes imperious perfect for leon. The 2/6 treefolk swings, and is blocked by woodland changeling, but the treefolk gets pumped by kithkin daggerdare. The slight dismay on WX’s face says it all: A play error…
(Ok regrettedly I missed something here as the action blazed faster than I could note down, but no notable board changes happened) Life total at this point: WX’s 18 to Leon’s 13.
Leon oblivion rings WX’s oblivion ring (yeah you read that right), freeing his GTC. Greatbow Doyen is also played. Some heavy math involved here as Leon does some thinking before declaring an alpha swing. … And he does JUST enough to finish off WX…

2-0 to Leon.

Note: I let mark record this match. Due to some judging negligence involving life totals, this particular round might have ended up being replayed, but eventually it was awarded to WX as the board position was clearly in his favour, and the error probably wouldn’t have changed the outcome much.

Both players started by mulligan-ing to 6.
WX drops a plains, and turn 1 Goldmeadow Harrier
Leon only plays a swamp
WX drops a forest, and plays Wolf-Skull Shaman (WSS). Looks good for WX.
Plains for leon, and end.
Plains for WX, and a Leaf Gilder. Swings with both the harrier and WSS. 20 to 17.
Drops a swamp and plays an oblivion ring on WSS.
WX plays a forest, uses the Gilder for mana, and plays down Game-Trail Changeling (GTC), before swinging with his remaining creatures. (Note: It was incorrectly recorded that Gilder was part of the attack instead of being used for mana. This is where the discrepancy came from) Life total (as it was recorded) at this point: 20 to 14.
Plains for Leon, and festercreep.
WX uses his harrier to tap down festercreep, then swings with GTC and Glider.
Leon responds by playing violet pall on GTC, and festercreep swings for 1 damage.
WX plays down Gaddock Teeg (which got on the receiving end of an Eyeblight’s Ending), and swings with all his creatures. 19 to 5 (as it was recorded).
Leon swings with his faerie token.
WX drops a forest and alpha strikes. Leon responds by using festercreep’s ability, killing the harrier in the process. However, good play by WX as he uses earthbrawn to pump up the Leaf Gilder, resulting in (the incorrectly given) game over.

Leon 2, WX 1.

Forest for Leon.
Plains for WX
Swamp for Leon. No drop yet.
Forest for WX. Bramblewood Paragon is played.
Swamp, and an Elvish Harbinger. Leon searches for a Game-Trail Changeling.
WX plays a Knight of Meadowgrain, and swings with the Paragon. 20 to 18.
Leon plays cloudcrown oak and ends.
WX plays daily regimen on his knight of meadowgrain
Leon drops his Lys Alana huntmaster.
WX pumps his knight with daily regimen, and proceeds to swing for some nice damage. 25 to 13. (the knight of meadowgrain has lifelink, don’t forget!)
Timely response from Leon as he plays an oblivion ring on the knight of meadowgrain. He swings with the huntmaster and cloudcrown oak. Bramblewood paragon throws itself in the way, reducing damage taken. 22 to 13.
WX plays a Galepowder Mage.

“Stay focused,” advises Jonlim. Leon plays imperious perfect (again a free elf token!). Huntmaster, GTC, and two tokens attack, with potentially 13 damage at stake here. WX chooses to take the damage, and may well have regretted it as fistful of force is played by Leon! Leon doesn’t win the clash, but the impact is very much there. 2 to 9. Ouch.
Galepowder mage swings again, taking away 4 damage. WX makes it hit harder as he plays earthbrawn, but sadly, it seems like too little too late as Leon kills him off the next turn.

3-1 to Leon.
