Upset of the day:
Soon Yoong 0 Yinkwan 2 – Soon Yoong’s deck had plenty of firepower while Yinkwan was lacking a few black staples. Despite having Tamiyo on the board, Soon Yoong still lost.

Player of the day:
Sean Goh – on his first draft with our playgroup, he finished in 1st place. Possibly the best player our playgroup has seen, with an incredible learning rate. Calm and goofing off most games, yet belies a serious streak, a solid player to look out for when he makes a repeat appearance.

Deck of the day:
Sean Goh – at first glance, his R/W human aggro deck seems like a combination of second-tier cards cobbled together. 2 maindeck Cathedral Sanctifier exemplifies this. However, his deck was capable of some really explosive plays, with Banners Raised and Thatcher Revolt doing the heavy lifting alongside all-star Riot Ringleader (Scroll down for full decklist). This allows for him to produce 10+ damage out of the blue. Well done Sean!

Overall, it was an exciting draft, with the top 3
all on 15 points and having to be separated by “goal difference”, while 5th/6th
place were decided on “goal difference” as well.
Thank you all for drafting today! Hope to see you
guys again sooner rather than later!

Round
6 feature matches – part 1:
Jonlim (12 points) vs Soon Yoong (12 points)
Jonlim and Soon Yoong were both sporting unbeaten 4-0 records at the end of Round 4, but lost their matches in Round 5 to give up their unbeaten records. They find themselves paired against each other in Round 6, and only one of them can avoid suffering consecutive losses over 2 rounds.

Jonlim
was piloting a mono black deck (one of the two in the room today) featuring
Griselbrand and a splashed Bonfire of the Damned, enabled by his twin copies of
Vessel of Endless Rest. Featuring many removal spells such as Death Wind and
Bone Splinters, he aims to eliminate opponents’ threats before landing his own:
Griselbrand. This strategy has worked very well so far, but he will have his
work cut out by Soon Yoong’s deck, which has the perfect foil to such a
strategy.
Soon
Yoong is playing a bomb laden U/W fliers control deck sporting Divine
Deflection, Stolen goods and the big one: Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. Soon Yoong has
never lost a match so far where Tamiyo hits the board, except in the last round
against Yinkwan. However, Jonlim’s deck is more removal-dense while Yinkwan’s
is creature-dense, which means Jonlim will have a tougher time dealing with
Tamiyo.
Game 1
Jonlim
wins the die roll. Jonlim plays a Swamp while Soon Yoong lays Island. Jonlim
plays Swamp and casts Butcher Ghoul. Soon Yoong plays Plains and passes. Jonlim
plays a Swamp. He attacks with Butcher Ghoul and plays a postcombat Tormentor’s
Trident, signaling his Malicious Intent to go aggressive.
Jonlim 20 Soon Yoong 19
Soon
Yoong dropped a Plains and a Thraben Valiant. Jonlim plays Swamp, equips the
trident onto the Butcher Ghoul and swings for 4, which Soon Yoong lets through.
Jonlim 20 Soon Yoong 15
Soon
Yoong plays Island and casts Spectral Prison on Butcher Ghoul.
He swings with Thraben Valiant for 2 damage. Jonlim casts Death Wind on Butcher Ghoul for 0 at end of turn to remove Spectral Prison.
He swings with Thraben Valiant for 2 damage. Jonlim casts Death Wind on Butcher Ghoul for 0 at end of turn to remove Spectral Prison.
Jonlim 18 Soon Yoong 15
Jonlim
casts Blood Artist and goes to town with Butcher Ghoul. Soon Yoong blocks with
his Thraben Valiant. Butcher Ghoul comes back with a +1/+1 counter while Blood
Artist triggers twice.
Jonlim 20 Soon Yoong 13
Jonlim 20 Soon Yoong 13
Soon
Yoong casts Island and then plays his bomb: Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. Jonlim is in
big trouble if he doesn’t get rid of the planeswalker anytime soon. Soon Yoong
just needs to keep it alive for it to generate a ridiculous advantage. Soon
Yoong immediately uses Tamiyo to tap Butcher Ghoul and it goes to 5 loyalty.
Jonlim equips Blood Artist with the trident and attacks Tamiyo down to 2 loyalty. Soon Yoong once again taps the Butcher Ghoul and Tamiyo goes back up to 3 loyalty. Soon Yoong plays a Midvast Protector to defend against Blood Artist. Jonlim plays a Swamp and attacks with Blood Artist again, but Soon Yoong blocks with Midvast Protector before uses Fleeting Distraction to save his blocker. Blood Artist dies and triggers for Jonlim, but now he has no active threat to pressure Tamiyo. He casts Undead Executioner and passes the turn.
Jonlim 21 Soon Yoong 12
Soon
Yoong plays Island, and draws a card off a freshly-summoned Gryff Vanguard. He
uses Tamiyo to tap Undead Executioner this time, going up to 4 loyalty. Jonlim
equips his Tormentor’s Trident onto Butcher Ghoul and attacks Tamiyo, but finds
the way blocked by Midvast Protector. They trade. Soon Yoong attacks with Gryff
Vanguard, taps down a Swamp with Tamiyo (going up to 5 loyalty) and plays a
postcombat Mist Raven bouncing Undead Executioner. Tamiyo is single handedly
taking over this game!
Jonlim 18 Soon Yoong 12
Jonlim
plays a Swamp, another Undead Executioner, and uses Bone Splinters to wipe Soon
Yoong’s Mist Raven and Gryff Vanguard. Soon Yoong calmly plays a Plains,
summons Archangel, and taps Jonlim’s Swamp with Tamiyo (now on 6 loyalty.
Jonlim plays a Swamp and a Searchlight Geist, before equipping it with
Tormentor’s Trident and passing the turn. Soon Yoong used Mist Raven to bounce
Jonlim’s Undead Executioner and ticked up Tamiyo to 7. He attacked with
Archangel.
Jonlim 13 Soon Yoong 12
Jonlim
casts Maalfeld Twins and ends the turn. Soon Yoong goes to town with Archangel
and Mist Raven for 7 damage total. Soon Yoong didn’t use Tamiyo this turn.
Jonlim 6 Soon Yoong 12
Jonlim
is facing lethal damage next turn, he needs a fabulous topdeck to stay in this
game despite Soon Yoong’s play error of not using Tamiyo the last turn. Jonlim’s
deck offered up Searchlight Geist. He equipped Maalfeld Twins with the trident
and killed Tamiyo, before casting the Searchlight Geist to hopefully defend
against Archangel. Unfortunately, Soon Yoong has a Crippling Chill for the
blocker and attacks for lethal.
Jonlim 0 Soon Yoong 12
Soon Yoong wins Game 1.
Game 2
Jonlim
opted to go first. He opened with Swamp and Soon Yoong played island. Jonlim
played Swamp on T2 and Soon Yoong played Island again. Jonlim then played Swamp
on T3 and cast Soulcage Fiend. Soon Yoong only had Island. Jonlim played a
Swamp and attacked for 3 damage, before casting another Soulcage Fiend. Did
Soon Yoong keep a slow hand?
Jonlim 20 Soon Yoong 17
Soon
Yoong played nothing (not even a land) and said go. Jonlim attacked with 2x
Soulcage Fiend, one of them gets a Crippling Chill from Soon Yoong.
Jonlim 20 Soon Yoong 14
Soon
Yoong plays Plains and casts Stolen Goods. Unfortunately, he only gets a Vessel
of Endless Rest from Jonlim. Jonlim plays a Swamp and attacks with the untapped
Soulcage Fiend.
Jonlim 20 Soon Yoong 11
Soon
Yoong still hasn’t played any nonland permanents yet. He passes the turn yet
again! Jonlim accepts the invitation and goes to town with 2 Soulcage Fiends to
knock Soon Yoong down to 5, and then casts 2x Bone Splinters on his own 2x
Soulcage Fiend to make both players lose 6 life and win the game.
Jonlim 14 Soon Yoong 0
Jonlim wins Game 2.
Game 3
Soon
Yoong opens with Island and Jonlim opens with Swamp. Soon Yoong plays Plains
and Jonlim plays another Swamp. Soon Yoong plays nothing and Jonlim plays Swamp
and Vessel of Endless Rest. Soon Yoong plays nothing yet again and Jonlim plays
Swamp. Soon Yoong plays Plains and Jonlim plays Swamp. STILL NO CREATURES AFTER
5 TURNS! Soon Yoong plays nothing and Jonlim plays the first creature of the
game on Turn 6: Butcher Ghoul. Surprisingly, Soon Yoong uses Crippling Chill on
it just to draw a card. It paid off as he found his first creature next turn.
He played Island and Midvast Protector. Jonlim did nothing since his Butcher
Ghoul was still feeling cold from the Crippling Chill.
Soon Yoong played Island and cast Nearheath Pilgrim, pairing it with Midvast Protector. He attacked with the Midvast Protector for 2 lifelink damage.
Soon Yoong played Island and cast Nearheath Pilgrim, pairing it with Midvast Protector. He attacked with the Midvast Protector for 2 lifelink damage.
Jonlim 18 Soon Yoong 22
Jonlim
plays a Swamp and attacks with Butcher Ghoul. Soon Yoong didn’t offer his
Nearheath Pilgrim to block and took 1 damage. Jonlim casts Barter in Blood
postcombat to sweep Soon Yoong’s creatures, while growing his own Butcher Ghoul
due to undying.
Jonlim 18 Soon Yoong 21
Soon Yoong plays Plains and summons Tamiyo, the Moon
Sage and taps Butcher Ghoul with it, going up to 5 loyalty. Tamiyo has been a
house all day and it is no surprise that Soon Yoong won Game 1 when Tamiyo hit
play, and lost Game 2 when it wasn’t. Jonlim played his own bomb: Griselbrand.
However, Tamiyo was a more than effective answer to it. Soon Yoong didn’t even
need Tamiyo’s help to deal with Griselbrand. He played Plains, and cast Mist
Raven to bounce Griselbrand. Tamiyo tapped down Jonlim’s Vessel of Endless Rest
and went up to 6 loyalty. Jonlim attacked Butcher Ghoul into Tamiyo, with Soon
Yoong choosing not to block with Mist Raven. Tamiyo goes down to 4 loyalty.
Jonlim casts postcombat Soulcage Fiend and Searchlight Geist.
Soon Yoong taps down Soulcage Fiend with Tamiyo (now
at 5 counters), plays Plains and casts Gryff Vanguard. He attacks with Mist
Raven for 2 damage.
Jonlim
16 Soon Yoong 21
Jonlim plays Swamp and thinks for a bit. He attempts
Death Wind on Gryff Vanguard, but Soon Yoon trumps that with a big play. He
casts Ghostly Flicker on Mist Raven and Gryff Vanguard, saving his creature
while drawing a card and bouncing Searchlight Geist. This play rattled Jonlim
and he was unamused. He replayed the Searchlight Geist and attacked Tamiyo with
Butcher Ghoul again. Soon Yoong chose not to block and Tamiyo was now at 3
counters.
Soon Yoong untapped and had a ridiculous turn. He
used Tamiyo to tap down Soulcage Fiend, played Emancipation Angel to BOUNCE HIS
OWN Tamiyo, and REPLAYED Tamiyo, using it to tap Searchlight Geist, going up to
5 counters. He then attacked for 5 damage.
Jonlim
11 Soon Yoong 21
Jonlim used Death Wind on Emancipation Angel and attacked
with Butcher Ghoul into Tamiyo to bring it down to 3 counters. He was a bit
desperate at this point knowing that the fliers were putting him on a clock
while Tamiyo was tapping down his creatures. He used Bone Splinters,
sacrificing Searchlight Geist to deal with Gryff Vanguard, and played another
Bone Splinters, sacrificing Butcher Ghoul to deal with Mist Raven. The board
was now empty except for Jonlim’s Soulcage Fiend.
Soon Yoong simply repopulated his board with Farbog
Explorer and Mist Raven bouncing Jonlim’s Soulcage Fiend, then used Tamiyo to
tap down Jonlim’s Vessel of Endless Rest, going up to 6 counters.
Jonlim resummoned his Griselbrand, but was unable to
draw 7 off it or face lethal immediately.
As expected, Soon Yoong tapped down Griselbrand with
Tamiyo (7 counters) and used Spectral Prison to lock Griselbrand away. He swung
with Farbog Explorer for 2 damage. He then played a Midvast Protector.
Jonlim
9 Soon Yoong 21
Jonlim played Swamp and cast Grave Exchange, gaining
back a Searchlight Geist while Soon Yoong sacrificed Midvast Protector.
It is now T15. Soon Yoong uses Tamiyo to tap
Searchlight Geist and swung with Farbog Explorer and Mist Raven for 4 damage.
Soon Yoong ticked up Tamiyo to 8 counters tapping down a Swamp.
Jonlim
5 Soon Yoong 21
Jonlim played a Vessel of Endless Rest and use Bone
Splinters, sacrificing Griselbrand to kill Mist Raven in a desperate attempt to
stay alive.
Jonlim
3 Soon Yoong 21
Soon Yoong ticks up Tamiyo to 9 and attacks with
Farbog Explorer.
Jonlim
1 Soon Yoong 21
Facing ultimate from Tamiyo and lethal from Farbog
Explorer, Jonlim scoops.
Jonlim
1 Soon Yoong 21 (Jonlim concedes the game).
Soon
Yoong wins Game 3.
Soon
Yoong wins match 2-1 (12-0, 0-14, 21-1 concession).
Let's have a round of applause for Soon Yoong's MVP!
Round 6 feature matches – part 2:
Marvin (6 points) vs Wei Xiang (6 points)
Marvin starting horrendously with 3 straight losses in the first 3 rounds, but then rattled off consecutive wins in Rounds 4 and 5, he will be looking to continue his comeback and make it 3-in-a-row with a victory over Wei Xiang this round. Wei Xiang’s record today has been nothing short of erratic. His record stands at: win, loss, win, loss, loss. He will be looking to avoid a 3-in-a-row as well…that is, in terms of losses.

Marvin
is playing a R/G fatties aggro deck sporting heavy hitters. He doesn’t have 1,
or 2, but 3 (three) copies of Pathbreaker Wurm! This 6/4 soulbond trampler acts
as a pointy end in any stalemate, piercing through the toughest of defenses.
Vorstclaw and Howlgeist also ensure that Marvin will not be short of threats in
the late game. To enable his dominance of the combat zone, Marvin also has a
good suite of combat tricks, Sheltering Word and Terrifying Presence being the
most significant.
While
Marvin’s deck packs mostly brawn, Wei Xiang’s deck packs the brains. He is
running a U/G tempo-aggro deck chock full of tricks such as Crippling Chill,
Mist Raven, and Ghostly Flicker. The green half of his deck provides for strong
beaters that act as clocks, such as Trusted Forcemage. Nephalia Smuggler is an
all-star in his deck and allows for some nifty tricks in conjunction with his
other creatures.
Both
players had many overlapping cards, including blessings of nature and trusted
forcemage, and it will be interesting to see how this almost-mirror with
different gameplans pans out.
Game 1
Both
players start the game with a mulligan.

Marvin 18 Wei Xiang 20
Marvin
replays his Hanweir Lancer, pairing it with Wandering Wolf. Wandering Wolf
attacks Wei Xiang for 2 damage.
Marvin 18 Wei Xiang 18
Wei
Xiang plays an Island and casts Blessings of Nature, placing 1 counter on
Timberland Guide, and 3 counters on Mist Raven. (refer to pictures below) After that, he attacks with a big Mist Raven (now a 5/5) for 5 damage. Marvin is in trouble.
Marvin 13 Wei Xiang 18
Marvin
has an underwhelming turn. He casts Mountain and ends his turn, unable to
attack into the now-larger Timberland Guide. Wei Xiang untaps, plays a Forest,
casts a Gryff Vanguard, and attacks with Mist Raven to bring Marvin down to 8.
Marvin 8 Wei Xiang 18
Marvin
does nothing of note and Wei Xiang attacks with 8 power worth of fliers to win
a very strange game 1.
Marvin 0 Wei Xiang 18
Wei Xiang wins Game 1.
Game 2

On
turn 5, we finally see some prose-worthy action. Marvin lays his Forest, casts
a Mad Prophet, and wanted to swing with Nettle Swine but Crippling Chill denies
it. Wei Xiang passes his own turn without a play while Marvin cycles a card
using Mad Prophet.
On
turn 6, Marvin played a mountain and summoned the mighty Pathbreaker Wurm (his
deck had 3 as mentioned earlier) and soulbonded it to Nettle Swine (which was
still tapped due to the earlier Crippling Chill). He attacked with Mad Prophet.
Marvin 20 Wei Xiang 18
Wei
Xiang topdecked an Island (which he needed quite desperately), and played it.
He summoned Nephalia Smuggler and ended his turn. It was now Marvin’s turn to
give Wei Xiang a taste of his own medicine, casting his own copy of Blessings
of Nature, putting 2 counters on Nettle Swine and 2 counters on Pathbreaker
Wurm. His decision to spread out the tokens was justified as Wei Xiang cast a 2nd
copy of Crippling Chill on the Pathbreaker Wurm during declare attackers step.
Marvin shrugged and swung in with Nettle Swine for a whopping 6 damage.
Marvin 20 Wei Xiang 12
Wei
Xiang played a Vanishment on Marvin’s Nettle Swine to buy some time.
Marvin shrugged and replayed Nettle Swine (repairing it with Pathbreaker Wurm), and chose to attack with Mad Prophet.
Marvin shrugged and replayed Nettle Swine (repairing it with Pathbreaker Wurm), and chose to attack with Mad Prophet.
Marvin 20 Wei Xiang 10
Wei
Xiang plays a Gryff Vanguard and passes the turn with no mana up. Marvin goes
to town with a 4/3 trample Nettle Swine, 2/2 Mad Prophet, and a 8/6 trample
Pathbreaker Wurm. Wei Xiang didn’t even bother blocking as he scooped up his
cards, Marvin has leveled the score at 1 apiece with a perfect 20-0 game!
Marvin 20 Wei Xiang 0
Marvin wins Game 2.
Game 3
Bad
luck is the order of the day so far in this matchup, with missed land drops and
mulligans wrecking havoc on both players in the earlier 2 games. The plague didn’t
go away in the decider as both players opened with yet another mulligan. Wei
